Background

The Oxnard Public Library opened its doors in 1907 in a building funded by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation.  The Library began what might be called an "outreach program" early in its existence.  In 1909, the Library began to establish deposit stations, later raised to the level of branches, in the areas of Port Hueneme, Moorpark, Saticoy, Camarillo, Somis, and Santa Susana.  The Ventura County Board of Supervisors dissolved this arrangement in 1915 when the Board created the Ventura County Library System.

The Library went through several building expansions over the years.  A bookmobile service was introduced in 1956 and served as the LIbrary's first extension.  The Library moved to its second location on "C" Street in 1963 and its current 72,000 square-foot location in 1992.  The South Oxnard Center Branch Library opened in 1989, replacing the bookmobile service.  The Colonia Mini Library was opened in 1978.
