The following classes are offered at the Oxnard Public Library Computer Lab.  Please check the Computer Lab Calendar for dates and times.

All classes are free and are held in the second floor Computer Lab.  Registration is not required (except for the Introduction to Genealogy class); however, if fewer than 3 people arrive for a class, it may be cancelled.

"Staff Training" are classes for City employees only.

 

Globe Introduction to Computers I

This class is for absolute beginners. Learn how computers work, what the different parts of the computer are and the basics of using a keyboard.
No Prerequisites

Globe Introduction to Computers II

Continuing from where “Introduction to Computers I” left off, this class will teach you more about the keyboard and how to use a device called a mouse.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers I


Globe Introduction to Windows

“Windows” is a program that lets you operate many modern computers. Knowing how to use it is essential in order to use a computer for other purposes.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers I and
II

Introduction to the Mouse

This class is for people who have never used a computer mouse or are beginning users. Students will learn how to maneuver a mouse and will use it in practical applications such as opening menus, scrolling down pages, and completing forms. This would also be good preparation for the Introduction to Computers class.
No prerequisite.

Introduction to Microsoft Word

Learn to use the basic features of this word processing software to type letters or reports.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers class or equivalent knowledge.

Internet I

Learn what the Internet is, the World Wide Web, a Web browser, and a search engine.  Begin doing searches and learn how to print something from the Internet.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers class or equivalent knowledge.

Internet II

This class will demonstrate how to create a search query using Google, provide search exercises, and explain how to save information to a floppy disk.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers class or equivalent knowledge.

Internet III

This class will explain how to do a Boolean search and delve into the more advanced features of Google.
Prerequisite: Internet II class or equivalent knowledge.

Creating Tables and Charts in Word

Learn three ways to create a table in MS Word and how to turn it into a graphical chart.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Microsoft Word class or equivalent knowledge.

Understanding Files and Folders

Get an overview of how to organize files and folders on your computer.  Due to security considerations, this will be mostly a demonstration rather than a hands-on class.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers class or equivalent knowledge.

Overview of the Library's Web Page

Discover what the library offers on its Web site, such as searching for magazine and newspaper articles and renewing your books online.
No Prerequisite, but bring your Oxnard library card to learn how to check your account and use the online databases.

Finding Health Information on MedlinePlus

Tap the authoritative medical information available for free on the Internet using the Medline Plus Web site.
Prerequisite: Internet I class or equivalent knowledge.

Introduction to MS Excel

Students will be introduced to Excel, which is a spreadsheet program allowing one to create lists, address books, budgets, etc.
Prerequisite: Must be familiar with and comfortable using a computer.

Introduction to Genealogy

This class will explain how to begin researching your family history and demonstrate resources available on the Internet and other organizations.  It will be taught by members of the Ventura County Genealogical Society.
Reservations are required.  Please call 240-7344.

Introduction to the EBSCO Magazine Database

Learn how to use the library's computerized magazine index to look up articles for school papers or for subjects of personal interest.
No Prerequisite, but bring your Oxnard library card to learn how to use this database.

Introduction to Email

This class will introduce beginners to using email to correspond with friends and family who have email addresses.
Note: Must have a current Oxnard library card to set up an email account in this class.
Prerequisite: Internet I class or equivalent knowledge

Job Searching on the Internet

Learn about resources available on the Internet to assist you in searching for a job.
Prerequisite: Internet II class or equivalent knowledge.

Introduction to PowerPoint

Learn how to create a basic slide show presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint.
Prerequisite: Must be familiar with and comfortable using a computer.

  Improve Your Small Business Using Library Databases

Have a business? Thinking of starting one? Well, let the Oxnard Public LIbrary help you! Learn how to find suppliers, locate buyers for your product, obtain business advice, and much more using two of our most powerful business databases -- Proquest and Reference USA.

  How to Use a Flashstick and DiscCopier

Learn how to copy files to a flashstick and to use DiscCopier to copy files from one CD to another. If available, bring your own flashstick, as instructor only has one.

  Create an Email Address

Learn how to create an email address and use it to send messages to your friends and family.

  Unclaimed Property Forum

Each day the State of California receives thousands of dollars worth of unclaimed money and property from dormant accounts.  Do you know how to claim your forgotten property? Assemblymemebers Pavey and Nava invite you to an Unclaimed Property Forum to discuss this important state program.
