The Scripps Howard Foundation recently awarded a $5,000 grant to the Literacy Outreach Program. The Program was nominated for the grant by one of its tutors, Mitzi. Mitzi is an employee of the Ventura County Star newspaper, and was present when Star Publisher Tim Gallagher presented the check to the Literacy Outreach Program on June 9 th. To date, this is the largest grant the Program has received from a Foundation. Everyone at the library is so very grateful to the Scripps Howard Foundation, the Ventura County Star, and Mitzi! ********************************************* The Rotary Club of Oxnard has donated $1,000 to the Literacy Outreach Program for the second year in a row! Past President Patrick Mullin and current President Billie Jo Rodriguez were on hand to present the check to Library Director Barbara Murray, Public Services Supervisor Sofia Bellos and Literacy Coordinator Ann-Margaret Webb on July 18th. Literacy is just one of many worthwhile causes the Rotary Club of Oxnard supports. The club's generous donation will be used to purchase books for the Literacy Outreach Program's students. ********************************************* Our local Wal-mart has once again supported the Literacy Outreach Program with a grant. This year Wal-mart awarded $1,750 to the Oxnard Public Library's Adult Literacy Outreach Program. ********************************************* Sam's Club is our newest partner, donating $1,000 to further the cause of literacy in our community. The funds from these two grants will be used to purchase supplies for the Program's students and tutors. |
Learn about the Literacy Outreach Program
The Literacy Outreach Program provides one to one tutoring
to adults in the community who need help improving their ability to read
or write. The program is free to any English speaking adult 18 or older who
can meet with a volunteer tutor once a week at the Oxnard Public Library's
main branch on A Street. We ask for a three month commitment from students
and tutors.
Volunteer tutors attend a mandatory tutor training session before being matched with a student. Volunteer tutors do not need to have any prior tutoring experience, just a desire to help an adult learn to read or write! All tutoring takes place at the Oxnard Public Library's main branch during regular library hours.
If you, or someone you know, need literacy services or would like to become a volunteer tutor, please call the Literacy Outreach Program at 385-7536 or visit the Literacy Outreach Program office on the second floor of the Oxnard Public Library at 251 South A Street in downtown Oxnard.
