Enrich your life and the services provided to the community by becoming a volunteer at the Oxnard Public Library.

For some people, the opportunity to be a part of an organization and meet new people is a good enough reason for volunteering. Retired citizens can work with other retirees in providing a great service to the library through working with the Friends of the Library or with book sales. Working adults can volunteer to give back to the community or to gain experience in a Library career. Students can volunteer to show that they are active in the community and to gain work experience.

Because we recognize that volunteering represents a regular commitment of time and reliability on your part, we keep track of the time donated by each volunteer.  We offer a flexible work schedule to meet your personal needs.  We provide several events during the year designed to recognize the personal contribution you will make at the Oxnard Public Library.

Volunteers are provided with the training needed to perform tasks. As a volunteer, you won't have to worry about answering reference questions, checking items out to patrons, or selecting materials to purchase for the collection.  These will be handled by authorized library staff.

Here are some areas where your talents may particularly be helpful:

• Materials Processing - Typing book labels for new books and audio visual materials. Processing new materials for the shelves by helping the library to cover book jackets, place labels, and install security strips.
• Materials Mending - Give new life to well used materials by mending torn pages, worn book covers, and broken spines.
• Shelf Readers - Ever wonder how the books stay in order on the library shelves? A mishelved book is a lost book. Become a shelf reader and be a part of the solution. "Read" a section of the shelves on a regular basis and keep them in order.
• Paper Cutters - We try to provide a constant supply of cut paper to the public for note taking.  We need cutters to cut recycled paper into specific sizes for this use.
• Foreign Language Catalogers - We purchase books in Spanish, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Tagalog and Korean.  We welcome individuals who can read these materials to assist us in cataloging them using these languages.
