City of Oxnard Updates: High Winds / Smoke / Poor Air Quality

OXNARD, Calif. –  Moderate to high Santa Ana Winds are expected to continue until later today, Friday, Oct. 11 or early tomorrow morning, Saturday, October 12.

In addition to high levels of blowing dust and debris, there are wildland fires burning in Northwest portions of the San Fernando Valley and a small vegetation fire burning in the Santa Clara River bed. Both are adding to the poor air quality in the region. Neither of these fires poses a risk to the City of Oxnard.

Forecasts suggest that poor air quality conditions may increase in the afternoon hours and then reduce in the evening. During windy or smoky conditions, residents are advised to limit their physical activity and stay indoors with windows and doors closed as much as possible. Running air conditioning units can also help reduce smoke levels indoors.

The use of dust masks (N95 type, particulate respirators) and eye protection may help reduce these effects but may not be effective for everyone. If you or a family member are experiencing respiratory distress, you should consider temporarily moving out of the area and contacting your doctor.

Residents are encouraged to use extreme caution during the forecasted high wind event! Use extreme care when engaging in any activities that could cause sparks or ignite fires!

Be aware of blowing dust and debris, downed power lines, downed trees, broken limbs and local power outages. It is recommended that residents use this time to check their emergency supplies and review their emergency plans with family members, neighbors and coworkers.

Actualizaciones de la ciudad de Oxnard: fuertes vientos / humo / mala calidad del aire

OXNARD, Calif. Se espera que los vientos de Santa Ana continúen hasta más tarde hoy, Viernes 11 de Octubre o temprano por la mañana, Sábado 12 de Octubre.

Además de los altos niveles de polvo y escombros, hay incendios forestales en porciones del Noroeste del Valle de San Fernando y un pequeño incendio de vegetación en Santa Clara River. Ninguno de estos fuegos son un riesgo para la ciudad de Oxnard.

Pronostican que el aire puede aumentar esta tarde y luego reducir durante la noche. Durante condiciones de viento o humo, se recomienda a los residentes que limiten sus actividad física y permanecer en el interior con las ventanas y puertas cerradas tanto como sea posible. Corriendo las unidades de aire acondicionado también pueden ayudar a reducir los niveles de humo en interiores.

El uso de máscaras antipolvo (tipo N95, respiradores para partículas) y protección para los ojos puede ayudar a reducir estos efectos pero pueden no ser efectivos para todos. Si usted o un miembro de su familia están experimentando dificultad respiratoria, debe contactar a su doctor.
