Water…Essential to All Life:
Past, Present and Future
The GREAT Program, which was launched by the City of Oxnard in 1999, is a comprehensive water supply project that is designed to improve water supply reliability, improve water quality for the future, and reduce the city’s reliance on dwindling imported supplies.
The GREAT Program combines wastewater recycling, brackish groundwater desalination, groundwater injection, storage and recovery, and restoration of local wetlands to provide an additional water supply source to the Oxnard Plain through the year 2030. A cornerstone of the GREAT Program is the Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF), sometimes called the AWPF, which will produce highly treated water that is so pure it can be used to meet any future needs.
