Construction
Construction sites are inspected for sediment trapping, materials used on site, and the proper storage of these materials. The inspections, primarily look for Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP). This document outlines the various best management practices that should be employed by the contractor to prevent stormwater pollution – specifically erosion and sediment control. We want to keep the amount of disturbed land and sediment on site, and to be certain all fuel, chemicals and paint are properly stored or disposed of when not in use.Â
Unfortunately, as a downside to growth, construction often presents one of the largest potential pollution concerns, especially when building on sites previously designated for agricultural use. When water is introduced during construction, old pesticides and nutrients from fertilizers buried deep in the soil can be released into the runoff system. Again, one of the most effective methods of preventing this type of pollution is education – something the staff of the Oxnard Wastewater Sectionâs staff are aware of and use to their advantage. The Wastewater Section uses the inspection results, as well as many other sources of input, to compile numerous reports during the year outlining areas in which improvements toward greater efficiency can be made. They also have the authority to issue Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permits.
