City of Oxnard Wins $7.1 Million Grant to Revitalize Durley Park
OXNARD, Calif. – The City of Oxnard won a $7.1 million grant for improvements to Durley Park as part of Governor Newsom’s “Outdoors for All” initiative to enable all Californians, regardless of zip code or income, to access parks and open space.
The California State Parks’ grant funding will allow the City to invest in restorations to the current Durley Park space and add amenities such as a new area for a bike pump track/skate park, a community track for walkers and joggers, and much more.
“Revitalizing our parks is very important to our community,” said Mayor John Zaragoza. “From Oxnard’s seniors to our youth, everyone’s quality of life improves with access to open-space and recreational opportunities.”
“We’re excited that the State recognized the potential of Durley Park,” said Mayor Pro Tem Bryan MacDonald, whose District 4 includes Durley Park. “With this grant funding, the City is able to add amenities, from picnic areas to athletic fields, that will benefit the whole community.”
Durley Park, located at 910 Hill St., currently has four baseball fields, two basketball courts, a playground, and approximately 1.5 acres of undeveloped area. The City held six community workshops from October 2020 through January of 2021 to develop the conceptual design that was included in the grant application. Workshop attendees identified and prioritized the amenities that were selected as the recreation features requested for the park.
Based upon the community’s feedback, the City will invest the grant funding on the following improvements at Durley Park:
Construct a new bike pump track/skate park area,
Create a walking and jogging track with lighting,
Install exercise equipment, a natural play area with trail/gathering space, and two picnic areas with BBQ space,
Add a basketball court with lighting, public art mural, restroom, parking lot, and lighting throughout the park,
Renovate four baseball fields, including lighting,
Install lighting for two existing basketball courts, and
Improve the irrigation system and landscaping throughout the park.
Oxnard is one of 112 award recipients selected from a pool of 468 California agencies competing for the grant funding. The City previously applied for and won $8.5 million for the activation of Campus Park. In total, Oxnard has received $15.6 million from the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program to invest in Durley and Campus parks.
The revitalization of Durley Park is anticipated to begin in March of 2022 and is estimated to be completed by March of 2025.
