Fire Explorer Post 9244
History
The Oxnard Fire Explorer post is the oldest Fire Explorer Post in Ventura County. Oxnard Fire Explorer Post 9244 was founded in October 1994 and had 31 charter fire explorers start the first academy.
The first academy class graduated in July 1995 with 17 fire explorers being appointed to ride-a-long status.
Fire Explorers have been instrumental in many ways both to the department and the community. In the short time that fire explorers have been in the city, we have gained recognition as a quality youth group from persons in city government, the community, and other fire departments.
A committee of sworn fire department personnel runs the Explorer Post.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oxnard Fire Explorers currently operate in three different stages.
New Recruit: Anybody can apply at any point during the year as long as they meet the requirements listed below. This will qualify them as a new recruit and as such, they will be able to attend monthly drill days (a 9-5 training day spent at the fire station), volunteer to assist at community/fire related events, and attend any other explorer related events.
Oxnard Fire Explorer: This status is achieved once a ‘new recruit’ has attended a Basic Academy, but has not passed all the tests. The Basic Academy happens once a year and usually consists of 3 weekends (if during the school year) or one week (if during the summer). This Basic Academy consists of 9-5 training days where various firefighter related topics are covered and tested. The timing of the academy depends on which timing works best for the most amount of new recruits.
Ride Along Certified Oxnard Fire Explorer: This status is achieved once a ‘new recruit’ or ‘fire explorer’ has completed a Basic Academy and passed all required tests. These explorers will be able to do all of the items listed above as well as go on 12 hour Ride Alongs at any Oxnard Fire Station where they can train and assist on 911 calls.
